After The Rain
Author Mary McCarthy
It has been said that Mary's Publishers should have shied away from the taboo subject of divulging the book content of "After The Rain"
The Blurb will put people off - Cancer Must Put People Off
I disagree. Mary has become a close confidente of mine over the last few months. Her warm spirit which shines so brightly, like a necklace of brightly sparkling lights has lifted me up on cold lonely nights. Neither her cancer nor the blurb on the back cover has put me off. On a cool evening a friend and I travelled along the M50.
"There it is" I said, a smile etched across my face.
"Huges and Huges", thats where Mary did her book signing...
"They must have her book" I yelped...
"Can we go in, I really want to buy it"
"But the cinema" my friend suggested
"Surely we have time" I pleaded
Now you might well ask what was the movie. The Sliver Lining Playbook. Of course I did not check the blurb. Nor did I view the HD Movie Trailer.
Cue the Movie Trailer.... Ahem....
Hes motivated, hes not so angry all of the time, the doctor said he could leave the mental hospital once he behaved himself....
It was all a bit weird but I decided to roll with the evening. They both do a lot of therapy. Their both a little mixed up. Their lost, but they fall in love.
Now this is what I believe..
Yes were all different. Yes this movie talks about mental illness. Yet it made me laugh. Mental Illness shouldnt be so taboo. Terminal Cancer shouldnt be so taboo.
Mary's principal Characters set themselves goals, challenges, aim for extensions on life. The book "After the Rain" celebrates life. Mary inhales crisp fresh air, filling up her lungs with hope, love and longing.
Mary McCarthy is an inspiration to all of us. Mary tells us how to live life each and every day as if it was our last. Let the tears roll, let the laughter loose. A time to pass over comes to us all. Her writing is magical. Its different. She uses words I havent heard of, but I like.
"Lilt" no not the totally tropical taste, the accent...
Oh heres someone special who I happen to have a bit of a crush on reading an extract from Mary McCarthy's "After The Rain"
"After The Rain"
Of course I have a crush on him
Cue - Controversial Blurb....
How would you react if you were diagnosed with terminal cancer? How would
you feel? This is the situation for Emer Dorgan, a librarian in her fifties who has been looking forward to early retirement and the freedom to pursue her
hobbies and dreams. Coming to terms with the awful prognosis is Emer's biggest challenge but it also permeates the lives of those who love her. Together they
embark on a turbulent, irreverent but ultimately heart-warming roller-coaster
ride as Emer lives out her last days. There is still so much life to be lived:
a sentimental journey, a house to be renovated, an encounter with a blast from
the past, and a new life to be brought into the world by her beloved American
niece Avril who comes to stay with her. And what of reconciliation? For this is
a family torn apart by tragedy and a horrific secret concerning the violent
death of Avril's mother many years before. Can Emer's approaching death work
miracles? How you die is as important as how you live.
